Avoid Boston Rental Scams
Moving from another city makes it difficult to know whether an apartment, landlord or agent is legitimate. Choose Boston can help verify listings and provide a local point of contact before someone sends deposits or signs a lease.
Common warning signs
- You're asked to wire money, pay by gift card or use a payment app before seeing the unit.
- The landlord is “out of the country” and will mail you the keys.
- Rent is far below similar apartments in the same neighborhood.
- Nobody can show you the inside, in person or on live video.
- You're pushed to decide today, before a lease exists.
In Massachusetts, a landlord can collect at most first month’s rent, last month’s rent, a security deposit no larger than one month’s rent, and the cost of a new lock before you move in.
